# Why Does DarkHorse Wallet Require a Seed Phrase Instead of a Private Key?

Since DarkHorse Wallet launched, many users have asked: “I have my private key, so why can’t I import it directly?”

To explain this, let’s start with how RGB assets are managed and why an individual address key cannot replace the wallet’s complete key structure.

## 1\. RGB Involves More Than Managing an Address

RGB asset states are associated with Bitcoin’s unspent transaction outputs, or UTXOs.

When sending and receiving RGB assets, a wallet needs to identify which outputs carry assets, manage the keys that control those outputs, and store and validate the corresponding asset data.

This is part of RGB’s **client-side validation** model. Bitcoin records cryptographic commitments, while the relevant asset data and proofs are exchanged and validated by the participants.

An RGB wallet therefore does more than import an address and display a balance. It manages the relationships between keys, transaction outputs, and asset data.

For the underlying mechanics, see the [RGB protocol documentation on commitments and single-use seals](https://docs.rgb.info/commitment-layer/commitment-schemes?ref=blog.dhorse.fun). We also explain these responsibilities in our [introduction to DarkHorse Wallet](https://blog.dhorse.fun/wallet-1/).

## 2\. A Seed Phrase Generates Multiple Keys. One Address Key Cannot Restore Them All.

To manage these functions, DarkHorse Wallet uses a hierarchical deterministic key structure.

RGB and regular BTC use separate derivation branches, generated from the same seed phrase. The seed phrase provides the foundation from which the wallet derives the keys it needs.

An individual address’s private key is only one key within that structure. It cannot reconstruct the seed phrase or recover the keys on the other branches.

Think of the seed phrase as the root of a tree, with different branches serving different purposes. Importing one leaf does not restore the tree.

This structure follows the hierarchical deterministic wallet model described in [BIP32](https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0032.mediawiki?ref=blog.dhorse.fun), which defines how a single seed can generate a tree of key pairs.

**This is why DarkHorse Wallet requires a seed phrase for import: an individual address key provides its corresponding signing capability, but cannot supply the full set of derived keys the wallet needs.**

Here, “individual private key” means a single address key, rather than an extended private key used for hierarchical derivation.

## 3\. Lightning Also Requires Its Own Keys

DarkHorse Wallet’s Lightning integration adds another set of key requirements.

The Lightning node’s identity and signing keys are derived from the seed phrase. A regular BTC address’s private key cannot replace those keys or reconstruct the original node identity.

Importing a single address key therefore cannot restore the complete key structure used by the wallet’s BTC, RGB, and Lightning functions.

## 4\. BTC Addresses and Identity Addresses Serve Different Purposes

The addresses used for everyday BTC transactions and the identity address used for login and activities have different roles.

In DarkHorse Wallet, they are derived from different positions within the same seed phrase’s key structure.

The seed phrase allows the wallet to regenerate the corresponding keys. Importing one address’s private key does not give the wallet access to the other branches.

Using one seed phrase lets the wallet manage these separate functions within a consistent key structure.

## 5\. Restoring Keys Is Different From Restoring All Wallet Data

There is another important RGB concept to understand: **a seed phrase is not a complete backup of RGB asset data.**

RGB uses client-side validation. The relevant asset history and validation data are not all published on the Bitcoin blockchain, so they cannot simply be regenerated from a seed phrase and a blockchain scan.

As the RGB team explains:

> “A mnemonic phrase alone isn’t enough to restore a wallet.”

The additional validation data must also be backed up. Read the team’s explanation: [RGB Ownership Explained](https://rgb.info/rgb-ownership/?ref=blog.dhorse.fun).

Lightning channel recovery also involves additional data. Follow the wallet’s backup instructions for both RGB asset data and Lightning channel data, alongside securely preserving your seed phrase.

## How to Migrate From Another Wallet

### If Your Account Has a Seed Phrase

For a compatible seed phrase account in a wallet such as UniSat or OKX, use DarkHorse Wallet’s seed phrase import option.

Check the resulting addresses after importing. Matching addresses depend on compatible derivation settings; using the same seed phrase alone does not guarantee that every wallet displays the same address.

### If Your Account Only Has an Individual Private Key

Create a new DarkHorse Wallet and complete the backup first. Then use your original wallet to transfer supported assets to the appropriate receiving address.

For RGB assets, use the receiving information generated by DarkHorse Wallet’s RGB receive function.

**DarkHorse Wallet uses seed phrase import because it needs the foundation for a complete derived key structure covering BTC, RGB, identity addresses, and Lightning. The private key for just one address cannot replace that structure.**
